Accused Vic doctor stabber in court

A man accused of trying to stab a neurosurgeon to death at a Melbourne hospital has fronted court.

Kareem Al-Salam, 48, is charged with attempted murder over the attack on Dr Michael Wong in the foyer of the Western Hospital in Footscray in February.

Al-Salam appeared briefly in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday where his lawyer, Rainer Martini, sought an adjournment to allow him to discuss a recently completed psychiatric report with his client.

The court also heard that the prosecution was seeking medical records involving Al-Salam from the Western Hospital.

Al-Salam, of North Sunshine, is charged with attempted murder and two counts each of intentionally causing serious injury and recklessly causing serious injury.

He will face a committal mention hearing in September.

Dr Wong required surgery after the attack.
