Elderly man ploughs into shop front
An elderly driver has lost control of his car and smashed into a shop front window in Melbourne's north leaving a hefty damage bill.
The 77-year-old man lost control of the car and slammed through the front of the Battery Stop on the Hume Highway in Campbellfield, just after 1pm.
Police say the man was trying to park outside the shop, but he accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake and careered through the shop window.
The car was left wedged at the front of the store, ironically failing to see a huge stop sign outside.
Panicked staff and customers heard a loud crash and rushed to help the driver.
"We were going about our daily chores and we heard a big crash, and the next thing you know there was a big car parked inside our showroom," a staff member told 7News.
Miraculously, the driver escaped unharmed.
"It's very, very lucky that someone wasn't standing there looking at something right in front of it or walking past," a Victorian Police spokesman said.
The damage bill is likely to run into thousands of dollars.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash and say the driver could face charges of careless driving.
It is the sixth crash this month involving an elderly driver, with similar smashes in Fitzroy north and Lalor.
