Truck hits bridge, rolls

A driver has been freed from his truck cabin almost two hours after it struck a low clearance rail bridge and rolled onto its side in Melbourne's west.

The truck carrying a large container hit the bridge, which crosses Lloyd Street, and then tipped, trapping the driver.

Emergency services had been working to cut the driver free since the crash happened at about 9am.

MFB Commander Brad Quinn said: "On arrival we found a truck had rolled onto its side and the cabin was crushed up against a pylon.

"The driver was severely trapped by his legs for more than an hour-and-a-half.

"MFB rescue operators and Ambulance Victoria paramedics worked as a team to stabilise the driver and rescue him."

Commander Quinn said the driver was in a lot of pain but conscious and breathing throughout the delicate rescue operation, which required lifting, cutting and hydraulic equipment.

The driver, believed to be in his mid thirties, was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with leg injuries. He is said to be in a serious but stable condition.

North and south-bound traffic on Lloyd Street is expected to be blocked for at least another two hours.

Drivers have been urged to avoid the area.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
