Croc in terrifying act of cannibalism

Fascinated passengers onboard a river cruise in Cairns have witnessed a frightening act of crocodile cannibalism.

The Cairns Post reports a two-metre saltwater croc swallowed a much smaller reptile.

David White, who runs the Daintree River cruises on the boat, The Solar Whisper, said the crocodile is nicknamed Eric and was fishing along the river banks when the cruise first started.

"When we came back past we saw him with a much smaller 2011-model baby crocodile in his mouth," he said.

"He had obviously killed it and was attempting to swallow it, but it was just a little too big, so he swam away with it. When we saw him a few days later, he had a big belly so he must have finished it."

Mr White believes Eric didn't have a personal problem against his much smaller rival.

"I don't think it was a territorial thing. He would have been hungry, saw something move and just made a grab at it," he said.

"It doesn't matter what it is, if a croc sees something move they will go for it.

"Those on board Solar Whisper loved it."
