Preachers to return to mall
Members of the Street Church group have won a court case against the Adelaide City Council, challenging a by-law that prevents them from preaching their beliefs in Rundle Mall, a prominent shopping strip.
The council had previously banned them from preaching in the Mall citing a by-law, but the group challenged the ban, which was found by the Adelaide District Court in November to be invalid.
But the council counter-appealed, taking it to the Adelaide Supreme court, where today the Judge ruled in favour of the preachers.
Caleb Courneloup from the Street Church says it is a victory for religion, as well as freedom of speech.
"We're going to be able to continue to preach the gospel, we're going to be able to preach in Rundle Mall, preach wherever we want," he said.
"It's fantastic that we've won, praise God that we've won."
Mr Courneloup acted as the group's representative throughout the trial.
"I'm not a very educated person but I managed to argue constitutional matter, thanks to the grace of God, and it's him alone who should be given praise and glory for the victory," he said.
