Severe earthquake rattles North Island
A 5.8-magnitude quake off the East Cape coast has shaken parts of the North Island.
It struck just after 8.40am and was located 75km northeast of Te Araroa at a depth of 7km, according to GeoNet.
More than 420 people reported feeling the shake throughout the Gisborne and Bay Plenty region, with some describing it as strong.
Two other aftershocks, one a 2.8 and the other a 3.5 magnitude, struck in the next eight minutes.
A GeoNet spokeswoman told Fairfax the earthquake was an aftershock from the bigger quake that struck the area on September 2.
