Australia wins first Youth Olympic gold
Queensland teenager Brittany Dutton ensured Australia claimed the first gold medal of the 2014 Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China with a gutsy triathlon victory.
Dutton, 16, added to Australia's great history in women's triathlon by breaking away from her rivals on the cycle leg.
Emerging from the opening swim in eighth place, she quickly sensed her advantage in her strongest discipline and exited the bike led with a handy 20-seconds lead.
She extended that on the closing run to clock a winning time of 59m56s and win by 37 seconds from American Stephanie Jenks with France's Emilie Morer taking the bronze.
Dutton's coach Joshua White said her tactical sense paid off.
"She knew that if she came onto the run with a bunch of girls, then her chances of a medal has obviously diminished," he said.
"She made an executive decision to get away and her talent showed through."
Meanwhile, Australia's Kellie Gibson scored the first try of the maiden rugby sevens tournament at an Olympic event against Tunisia, who they defeated 31-0.
"I didn't really realise until I got up and I was like 'oh my God, I scored the first try at the Olympics for rugby'," she said.
