Abandoned newborn baby rescued from sewage pipe

Firefighters in the Zhejiang province of China have rescued a newborn baby boy from the sewage pipe of a residential building.

Residents called emergency services after hearing a baby's cries in the public bathroom of the apartment building.

Rescuers attempted to pull the baby from the pipe but were unsuccessful. In the end an L-shaped section of the pipe about 10-centimetres in diameter was removed and taken to a nearby hospital.

Vision from Chinese television shows doctors and rescuers working together to cut the baby out of the pipe.

The boy, thought to be only a few days old, is in good health in the hospital.

Police are treating the case as an attempted homicide and are searching for the baby's parents.

The issue of abandoned babies is not new in China, a country with strict family planning rules. Girls have been seen as less favourable than boys, sparking many parents of newborn girls to abandon their babies.

The case has ignited fierce debate and condemnation on China's version of Twitter, Sina Weibo.
