Boy lands third bull shark with hand reel

A 12-year-old boy has caught his third bull shark in the space of a year, with his latest catch weighing up to 50kg.

Isaac Callaway caught the five foot predator in Dunlops Canal at Mermaid Waters on a hand reel - making his catch even more spectacular.

The modest fisherman told 7News he was hoping to land another shark, saying they are very tasty.

"Dad went to go out on his paddleboard and I walked with him to take the paddle down there and there was something on the line," he said.

"The line was all out of the reel and then we pulled it in. We thought it was a stingray and it ended up to be a shark.

"I just thought it was stingray and I was annoyed because they are hard to get off the line.

"I haven't really told (my friends) much but they were amazed that I caught one around here.

"I was happy because I can eat it and it tastes nice, and the other ones we caught - I ate them.

The sheer weight of the five foot shark could not be reeled in by Isaac alone, requiring his dad and another man to pull the beast to shore.

"Yeah he takes it all in his stride. I mean he's purposely trying to catch sharks and this is his third one now and he just loves it," his father Dean Callaway said.

"He's achieving his goals.

"He's a pretty sensible kid. He's been listening to other fishermen and he listens to everything they say and he stays away from the mouth (of the shark). We are going to have lots of good eating for quite a while."
