Body of missing worker found in sewage tank

Searchers have found the body of a lab technician who fell into a huge sewage tank at a Bangholme treatment plant

The 52-year-old Endeavour Hills man - who was reportedly working for Melbourne Water - slipped into the pond at Eastern Treatment plant while taking a sample yesterday morning.

More than 1.5 million litres of sewage was drained form the ponds, with the Country Fire Authority, police and specialist divers spending more than eight hours trying to find the man.

It is understood colleagues reported the man missing shortly before 9am after spotting his equipment at the side of the sewage tank.

WorkSafe are investigating the incident.

Melbourne Water managing director Shaun Cox said in a statement requested by the Herald Sun:

"This is a very distressing time for his family and for us at Melbourne Water.

"Together with ALS Group, the sampling contractor, we are offering our full support to his family, colleagues, friends and our people.

"Safety is our highest priority and we'll be supporting Victoria Police and WorkSafe in their investigation.

"We'll also be conducting our own investigation."

The plant treats about 40 per cent of Melbourne's sewage or about 312 million litres a day.
