‘World’s rarest’ DVD worth $250 found at Aussie garage sale

One Aussie thrifter hit the jackpot when he picked it up for just $5.

A man has revealed how he discovered the “world’s rarest DVD” at a garage sale in country Victoria and sold it on eBay for $250 within a week.

The TikTok creator, who describes himself as a part-time reseller and goes by the name Aussie Thrifter, told Yahoo News Australia that he picked up three seasons of Full Frontal — an Australian sketch comedy series that ran on Channel Seven from 1993 to 1997 — from a home in the Gippsland region for just $5.

“Full Frontal is a TV show from the 90s which is so valuable because many people love the series but not many physical copies were produced in Australia so they are really hard to find, making them rare and increasing the value,” he said. “Hence, I was able to sell three out of the total five seasons for $250.”

He added that the buyer “either really likes the show or they are potentially a rare DVD collector”.

Old tech is back

It’s not the first time the 28-year-old has struck the jackpot. He’s been thrifting for almost two years but said one of his best finds came just a few months ago. “I recently picked up an old school JVC video camera that plays cassettes for free from Facebook Marketplace and I sold it a couple of weeks later on eBay for $400,” he explained.

The old-school tech appears to be having a resurgence according to the Aussie Thrifter, who said he’s sold many VHS/VCR players for $150 to $200. “I find them at garage sales and thrift stores,” he claimed. “I even sold a broken one, not working, for parts for $100.”

And it’s not just videos that are making a comeback. “I recently purchased four old digital radios at a garage sale for $15 each and all four sold for over $100 each,” the reseller said.

“They’re hard to find these days and people like to rebuy their same old radio when it breaks rather than buy a different, newer model. Plus they had their original boxes which helps with value."

‘It’s not for everyone’

The Aussie Thrifter, who’s got more than 16,700 followers, has now racked up more 209,600 views on his video of the Full Frontal find. In the clip he tells his audience that “the people at this garage sale had no idea the value” of “one of the rarest DVDs in existence”.

While some TikTok users were shocked to learn that people would pay that price for DVDs, others who personally owned all seasons of the series said they would never sell them. When it comes to thrifting, the Victorian man is the first to admit that “it’s not for everyone”.

“It’s a long learning process,” he said. “It takes about a year to get good at it but anyone can do it. So if you need some extra cash, get out there and get started."
