Woolworths slammed for 'ridiculous' change impacting parents

Sydney mum Alhana Friend was forced to push two trolleys around her local store this week after the new version was rolled out.

Woolworths is making another in-store change and parents are not happy — with many claiming it now makes going to the supermarket much more difficult.

A Sydney mum has slammed Woolies for introducing new plastic shopping trolleys which only have one child seat, making it "impossible" for her to go grocery shopping with her two young children, both aged under three.

Alhana Friend visited her local Woolies in Sutherland Shire in the city's south on Tuesday and was unable to find a trolley with a double seat. Eventually she was resigned to the fact she would have to push two shopping trolleys around the store.

"It's ridiculous. One kid wants what the other does so they scream or run away or pull things off shelves," she told Yahoo News Australia. "I know we can do delivery or click and collect, but sometimes you need to get to the shops for last-minute items."

Parents in despair over new Woolworths change

Many parents agreed with Friend online and said the change to Woolworths shopping trolleys would make an already difficult task more daunting.

"Some days I can only survive going into the shops if there are two-seater trolleys available!" one mum wrote, with others sharing they will probably now begrudgingly push a double stroller and "pull the shopping cart" behind them.

"Thanks for making the grocery shop with children even harder," a dad said.

Woolworths says new shopping trolleys are 'greener'

The supermarket told Yahoo News Australia the shopping trolleys are made of recycled plastic and the change is more environmentally friendly, with the hope the lighter material will be easier to manoeuvre.

"We’re working hard to grow greener for our customers and the environment," a Woolworths spokesperson said. "We also have trolley baskets that are made from 100 percent recycled plastic and give used milk bottles a second life in our stores."

It is unclear why the supermarket decided to make the new trolleys with only have one child seat, however, Yahoo understands metal trolleys with double seats have been retained at stores — with customers needing to ask staff if they cannot find one.

The new trolleys are available at select stores and will be rolled out in the coming years.
