Woman wins $150k on scratch card she received on Mother's Day

The NSW woman had no idea she had won the top prize until this week.

A NSW woman has been left reeling in excitement after scoring an incredible $150,000 jackpot on a $10 scratch card she was gifted four months ago on Mother’s Day.

The Goulburn mum said she initially believed she had won $1,000 after etching off each of her selected letters on her Jumbo Crosswords Tasmania ticket.

“I’m so pleased,” she told an official from The Lott who called her on Friday morning. “I’ve been sitting on this ticket since Mother’s Day. I took it down the other day to finally get it checked with a couple of other tickets.”

The woman said after taking the winning scratchie to a newsagent, a staff member told her she “had to claim the prize at the head office because it was bigger than what they could pay out”.

Goulburn mum first told she had won $1,000

“He thought I had won $1,000 but told me to confirm with The Lott,” the winner said, explaining that she then sent it off in the mail and first heard back on Thursday.

“The Lott Prize Administration team member said she was calling about my $150,000 Instant Scratch-Its win and I was dumbfounded. I said to her, ‘Are you sure? Is that real?’. I thought I’d won $1,000, so it was such a nice surprise – I didn’t expect it at all!”

The woman said the windfall could not have come at a better time with her and her family going on an interstate holiday next week. “…so we will celebrate the win over there!” she added.

Although eagerly anticipating her holiday, the Southern Tablelands mum said she would also be “financially smart and pay off some of our debt” with the “great boost”.

Scatch-it win 'excellent news'

Peter and Allison Watt, who own Newsextra Goulburn where the scratchie was sold, said the top prize win was “excellent news”.

“We’ve sold 16 major lottery prizes over 22 years of operating, but we haven’t sold a top prize in five years since moving to our new location,” Peter said.

“There’s no doubt this will be the start of our winning streak for Newsextra Goulburn, and we hope to grace more customers with wins in the coming months!”

In the financial year ending June 2023, there were 147 Instant Scratch-Its top prize winners across The Lott’s jurisdictions, who collectively took home more than $12.1 million in prizes.
