Woman 'very disappointed' by find in Coles spinach bag

A long-time Coles shopper says she was “very disappointed” to open a bag of spinach to find a dead moth sitting on the leaves.

The woman shared a photo of the dead moth and the spinach on the Coles Facebook page, explaining she has been purchasing the Coles brand rocket and spinach bag “for a very long time”.

“Today when I opened the bag to use, I found a dead moth after pouring the spinach into a bowl,” she wrote.

“You advertise that it is fresh and ready to eat! I don’t think so.

“Very disappointed as I have been a shopper with your company for a while now.”

She said at least she would like some feedback from Coles, which she did receive.

In a response to her post on Facebook a Coles spokesperson thanked the woman for getting in touch.

“We're sorry to see this poor experience with a bag of our Spinach & Rocket as we have strict quality controls in place to prevent this from occurring,” the Coles spokesperson wrote.

Coles asked for the woman to privately message them and provide the details of the product including “barcode, best before dates and any other numbers and letters printed on the packaging”.

While supermarkets in Australia have strict protocols to prevent these things from happening, finding dead bugs in food does happen.

Earlier this month, a woman who had stockpiled a 10kg bag of rice from Woolworths discovered an “unwanted freebie” inside.

The woman excited to get the bag of rice, which she said she waited in line for 30 minutes to buy and then threw away her receipt.

She said she got out the bag sometime later only to find a dead butterfly sitting at the top of the packet.
