Woman threatened with pickaxe in road rage attack thought she was going to die

A Sydney woman who survived a road rage attack involving a pickaxe has described her post-traumatic stress and the nightmares she’s unable to escape.

The victim, who can’t be identified, recorded the terrifying ordeal as it escalated out of control.

The woman had been chased, then a bottle was thrown at her car, and finally a terrifying pickaxe attack.

“I think he was absolutely trying to hurt me or kill me,” the victim said.

“I remember thinking, I cannot believe this is the way I am going to die.”

Earlier, she had passed a car driving erratically.

After stopping, she claims the male passenger punched her in the head.

“We all know if I was a man in that car this wouldn’t have happened, we all know this man is a coward and he attacked a woman on her own,” the victim said.

The woman’s injuries included bruising as well as post-traumatic stress.

While specific statistics aren’t kept on road rage attacks, recent figures from the Monash University Accident Research Centre reveal 86 per cent of Australian drivers admit to being aggressive behind the wheel, with 18 per cent saying they had chased other drivers.

“The problem with on-the-road confrontations is that for a big part of it you’re anonymous, so it can escalate a lot more quickly,” Monash’s Dr Amanda Stephens said.

The victim’s car was written off in the attack and she is now thousands of dollars out of pocket.

But she says she wants her attacker to “get help.”

“I want this to not happen to anybody else,” she said.

The 34-year-old accused has not entered a plea and is due back in court next month.
