Woman suffers bizarre face infection after eyebrow wax

The old adage 'beauty knows no pain' has a whole new meaning for one Australian woman after she contracted an infection from a routine eyebrow wax.

Sari Rae first posted a TikTok a few hours after she visited the salon reporting a swollen and painful eyelid, with the short clip showing one of her eyes is heavily swollen to the point of not being able to open it.

"I got my eyebrows done and I got my hair dyed, I reckon it's from the bleach," Ms Rae initially speculated.

"I can barely open my eye".

Ms Rae later posted another TikTok saying she went to the doctor, where they diagnosed her with periorbital cellulitis — an infection of the eyelid.

The woman said she was given a prescription for antibiotics by the doctor but was surprised when she learned how it was contracted.

"And guess what it's from?" she said in disbelief. "It's from waxing".

What is periorbital cellulitis?

Periorbital cellulitis is an infection of the eyelids and surrounding skin, usually just affecting one side of the face and is caused by a local infection of the skin, from something like a bite, scratch, or stye.

The condition is easily treated with antibiotics, however, according to Queensland Health, if left untreated it could turn into orbital cellulitis, a similar condition that affects the eyeball and can lead to impaired vision.

In October 2021, TikToker Courtney King shared her shocking story after she contracted a staph infection allegedly due to dirty tools used during the wax.

The TikToker detailed the terrifying moment she almost lost her sight, waking up the next morning to find her eyelid completely swollen.

"If I didn’t go to hospital when I did I could have gone blind in one eye or worse," she captioned the scary story.
