Woman left in ICU on holiday days after engagement

Days after her fiance proposed on holidays, a roof collapsed on the couple, leaving a young woman in the ICU with serious injuries.

Hailey Cooper was holidaying in Cancun with her partner William Hewett, when he proposed to her on March 20, a relative wrote on Facebook.

Five days after the proposal, on March 25, Ms Cooper and Mr Hewett were eating lunch at a restaurant when the roof collapsed.

The Riviera Maya News reported a roof collapsed at a beach club on Isla Mujeres on Thursday — six were injured while one person died.

On Facebook, the relative said Mr Hewett was not injured in the "horrible accident", however, Ms Cooper's injuries were extensive.

According to the GoFundMe set up to help the future Hewetts, three days after the incident and "a lot of work and patience", Ms Cooper and Mr Hewett were transported from Cancun Hospital to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami, Florida.

The GoFundMe said they were transported by Air Ambulance and Ms Cooper is currently in Trauma ICU.

Ms Cooper suffered multiple injuries, including fractures to her back, a tailbone fracture, a complete pelvic fracture, a concussion, epidural hematoma and facial trauma and fractures.

She also suffered multiple lacerations to her head, arms and back.

"Our goal is to financially help Hailey and The Cooper Family with any medical bills, hotel fees, Hailey’s apartment expenses while she recovers and the long road of recovery that lays ahead," the GoFundMe says.
