Woman catches neighbour stealing from her post box

A woman has called out a mail thief after catching the culprit on CCTV stealing a makeup parcel from her letterbox.

Melbourne-based actress and comedian Lucy Gransbury posted about the incident on her Facebook page, saying she was “devo” about the thievery – and then she found out who it was.

“A few weeks ago, someone stole a parcel from my letterbox. It was a bunch of fancy crap I ordered from Clinique,” she wrote. “I was devo. Ruined. Heartbroken.”

After confirming with Australia Post that the parcel had definitely been delivered, she asked her apartment block’s body corporate if she could obtain security CCTV to see if anything untoward was happening.

They told us we would have to pay a few hundred dollars to get footage (of someone stealing a package worth less than a fifth of that),” she wrote.

“So did we go ahead? You bet we did. Was it worth it? You f***ing bet it was.”

The CCTV showed a “sneaky devil woman” entering the block with a key, confirming she was a resident of the apartment block.

“Clear, colour, hi-def footage … picking up my parcel, reading my name, shrugging, then keeping my glorious nude lipsticks and decadent moisturisers for herself. You can pinpoint the exact moment her soul left her body as evil took over.”

The footage was handed over to Victoria Police while Gransbury said she would decide what to do next.

“As soon as I stop screaming, I’ll decide what to do next,” she wrote.

“Suggestions welcome.”

Mail theft on the rise

Parcel theft is on the rise across Australia. The rise in online shopping – combined with the ability to allow items to be left unattended at front doorsteps – has lead to the perfect storm for opportunistic theft, police warn.

But it’s not always about easy pickings by strangers passing by. As the above case shows, allegedly even your neighbour could be stealing from you.

Ways to prevent mail theft

  • Install security cameras around the outside of your home

  • Make sure letterboxes are locked

  • Do not select the ‘authority to leave’ option when ordering online

  • Choose to have your parcel delivered to your nearest post office for collection
