Mail thieves get a nasty surprise when they open stolen package

Mail theft is becoming a widespread problem with online shopping on the rise, but one robber was delivered a box of karma with a stolen package containing 500 cockroaches.

It turns out, the joke was on the postage bandit, who would have opened a box addressed to insect scientist Rosalinda Vizina, only to discover hundreds of cockroaches inside.

The entomologist was planning on conducting a study with the creepy crawlies, and ordered hundreds of live critters online, but the delivery was snatched from her mail box.

“One of these boxes had been left open,” Ms Vizina, of Marina in Callifornia, US, told KRON-TV.

“It looked like it was pried open. And all the mail was gone.

“So, the post office was telling us about the mailbox thieves that have been happening all the way down the street.”

The insect expert said many neighbors in her apartment complex and neighborhood recently reported missing mail and parcels.

“I feel bad for the roaches in case they got smushed or tossed or something like that,” Ms Vizina said.

“For the thieves, I hope [the bugs] went everywhere.”

Australian Retailers’ Association Executive Director Russell Zimmerman advised online shoppers to be more logical with their delivery options.

"You can have the parcels delivered to a box, you can have it delivered to a post office, or you could have it delivered to work,” he suggested.

The advice could save you time and money.
