Video captures man fighting bull with child in his arms

A man has been caught on video attempting to fight a bull while holding a small child in his arms, as shocked onlookers watch in disbelief.

The unbelievable footage showed the man waving a cape with his left hand, and clinging onto the young boy with the right, as most people watched from behind barriers in the street.

The child appeared to be thrown from side to side as the man dodged the charging bull during an annual festival in Casa da Ribeira, a village near Santa Cruz on Terceira – one of the islands that make up the Azores archipelago, belonging to Portugal.

As part of the event, a bull is let loose on the streets tied to a long rope. The bull in the video appears to not be fully-grown, but the spectacle still shocked some of those watching in the crowd, while others applauded the matador’s moves.

Anti-bullfighting association Basta lodged a formal complaint about the incident with Portugal’s National Commission for the Promotion and Protection of Children and Young Peoples’ Rights, the Sun reported.

It also put pressure on authorities in the Azores to identify the man, believed to be the child’s father.

Basta described the incident as a “situation of total irresponsibility and a clear violation of the legislation that protects children in Portugal, as well as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child,” the group said in a statement.

“The authorities in the Azores should investigate this case and identify the individual who appears in the video.”

The footage emerged as Portuguese lawmakers voted overwhelming against a bill banning bullfights, which received only 31 votes in Portugal’s 230-seat parliament on Friday, the Sun reported.
