Bangladeshi woman charged over 'Islamic State inspired' stabbing Melbourne's north
A 24-year-old woman has been charged with a terror offence following an "Islamic State inspired" stabbing in Melbourne's north on Friday.
The charges come after a 56-year-old man was stabbed in the neck while sleeping his Callistemon Rise home in Mill Park at 4.25pm, Victoria Police said in a statement.
He was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital where is expected to undergo surgery for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police arrested a Bangladeshi national at the scene before taking her to Northern Hospital with a minor injury to her hand.
The Victorian Joint Counter Terrorism Team, which includes attachments from the Australian Federal Police, ASIO and state police charged the 24-year-old with one count of engaging in a terrorist act under the Commonwealth Crimes Act Section 101.1, the police statement confirmed.
AFP acting Deputy Commissioner, National Security, Ian McCartney described the attack "Islamic State inspired" but insisted there was no further threat to the community.
“We will allege this was a stand-alone, Islamic State inspired attack, designed to cause harm to our community,” acting Deputy Commissioner McCartney said.
Police executed search warrants on the Mill Park home and another dwelling at Bundoora, but Acting Deputy Commissioner Ross Guenther said police were not searching for anyone else in relation to the incident.
"This is an isolated incident and the community can be assured that Victoria Police is doing everything we can to keep the community safe," he said in the statement.
"The community can expect to see an increased police presence at a number of events today and at major events in the coming weeks."
The woman, who police arrived in Melbourne on February 1 on a student visa, is expected to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court Saturday morning.
