Shoeless man screams at woman for reading book on Melbourne tram

A shoeless man has been filmed yelling at a woman for reading a book on a Melbourne tram.

The footage, uploaded to Facebook by a passenger, was taken on the number 19 tram from North Coburg to Flinders Street on Thursday.

The man can be seen sitting on a seat at the rear of the tram, screaming expletives at the two women.

Jessica-Lee Parry told 3AW the man became angry after seeing another woman reading a Margaret Atwood book.

“Everyone was banding together and trying not to fuel the fire," she said.

Ms Parry said a number of other passengers came to the defence of the woman and a man can be heard shouting "enough" in the video.

"Sorry mate, didn't mean to offend you," the shoeless man says before continuing to yell at the women.

The man repeatedly calls the women "haughty" before eventually getting off the tram and making rude gestures through the window.
