Man to spend 11 years in jail after nearly stabbing two men to death

A man who went on a violent stabbing rampage in Melbourne, almost killing two men, will spend at least 11 years behind bars.

In March 2016, ice-user John Thackray, 33, stabbed stranger John Anderson nine times after he found him asleep in his South Yarra backyard and tried to wake him.

Just five months later, Shaun Foo found Thackray near his garage in the same suburb and was stabbed following a heated argument.

A police officer, who cannot be identified, spoke outside court on Wednesday, saying Thackray was highly dangerous.

"Had it been five minutes later for either victim, both of them would have died," he said. "So it's incredibly fortunate."

The court heard Thackray had a lengthy criminal history including punching a man on a train in 2011, dragging a woman down a laneway in 2012, and stealing a court painting in 2013.

Thackray will spend at least 11 years in jail.
