Detective Inspector Mark White told reporters the deaths were “tragic”.

“The two children exhibited evidence of being exposed to extreme heat," he said.

"It's just a very, very tragic incident that has occurred.

“They were very young children."

He added the investigation is in its “early stages”.

A neighbour told The Courier-Mail she’s “very upset” on learning the kids had died.

Another added she and her two granddaughters witnessed the two girls being carried out of the house “soaking wet”.

“It is a tragic accident, she was a good mum,” she told the paper.
