Two bodies found in submerged car on NSW North Coast

The bodies of a man and woman have been found in a submerged car at Port Stephens on the NSW North Coast.

NSW Police said emergency services were called to the Soldiers Point boat ramp just after 4.30am on Sunday after reports of a vehicle in the water.

Port Stephens-Hunter police officers located a white hatchback fully submerged with initial inquiries indicating one person found dead in the car.

A crime scene was established and a second body was discovered inside the car when the vehicle was being recovered from the water.

The bodies have been established to be that of a man and a woman, but they are yet to be formally identified.

Police Rescue, Marine Area Command divers, PolAir and SES volunteers are also assisting.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident has started.

The Soldiers Point boat ramp remains closed.

A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.
