Tributes flow for teen killed in Australia Day boating accident

Tributes are flowing for a teenage girl who died in a horror boating accident on Australia Day.

Darcy Sutherland, 16, died after two small aluminium boats collided on the Hacking River at Grays Point in Sydney’s south on Friday morning.

According to reports, witnesses said Darcy was thrown from the boat before being found face down in the water. Members of the public performed CPR on the teenager until the paramedics arrived.

A NSW Ambulance spokesman said she was pulled from the water before a Toll Ambulance rescue chopper winched in a doctor and critical care paramedic to assist her. Darcy was then transported to St George Hospital, where she sadly later died.

Friends pay tribute to teen

Numerous friends and community members have shared their heartbreak over the 16-year-old’s tragic death. A GoFundMe created to help Darcy’s grieving family has so far raised more than $33,000.

“Following the tragic accident that occurred on 26 January we are raising funds for the family in honour of Darcy Sutherland,” the fundraiser’s organiser, Jamil Barmania, said. “We have received numerous requests on how to help and we are creating this page to assist the family with the necessary arrangements.

“Thank you for your love and support and coming together to assist the family during this difficult time.”

Friends have flooded Darcy’s last TikTok videos with comments, saying she will be “missed by everyone who knew her”. “Always my beautiful girl. You will be missed dearly. Rest in peace angel,” one person said.

Boat accident 'rocks whole community'

A Grays Point Facebook page said the “whole community has been rocked by the tragedy”. “We know everyone is feeling a little helpless and don’t know what to say to those involved — here is a way to contribute to the family of beautiful Darcy to show your support,” the post, which included a link to the fundraiser, said.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are not yet known and police are investigating. Two 16-year-old boys were also taken to the hospital for mandatory testing.

The vessels have been seized for examination. A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
