Toddler may never walk again after freak drinking glass accident
A two-year-old girl may never walk again after falling on a drinking glass and severing her spinal cord.
The freak accident left the girl partially paralysed on her left side, with limited movement in her left arm and leg.
Toddler Jaclyn ‘Jackie’ Derks was playing in her family’s home in Calgary, Canada in July, when the tragic accident occurred.
“She was playing, laughing and being as joyous as always when she fell between a couch and a bed, onto a household drinking glass,” her mother Kayla Rudichuk wrote on a GoFundMe page.
“The glass shattered under Jackie and went into the back of her neck.”
Jackie was rushed to a local hospital where the glass was removed from her spine. However, her injuries robbed her of movement in her left arm and leg.
“The doctor sat us down and said, ‘I don’t know if this child is ever gonna be able to walk again. We’ve got the glass out, but she is paralysed’,” Ms Rudichuk told People.
“It’s just been an emotional roller coaster. It’s a nightmare,” she said.
Jackie has been recovering at the Alberta Children’s Hospital for several weeks and is undergoing physical therapy.
While she has recently started to use her left arm and leg again, it is unclear if she will walk unassisted in the future.

Her mother has started a GoFundMe page to raise money for Jackie’s medical expenses and cost of living.
“We are hopeful and are all praying for this little girl to be able to walk again,” Ms Rudichuk said on GoFundMe.
“Jackie was always the life of any situation.
“She loves to run and play with her 5 year old sister, and we want nothing more than for that to be in her future again.”
