Toddler drowns in bucket just centimetres away from mum cooking in kitchen

A two-year-old toddler has drowned in a bucket as her mother was cooking in the kitchen just metres away.

Little Elmar Dahil fell into the bucket which her mother, Fatma Dahil, had been using to clean the family home in the city of Bursa, capital of north-western Turkey’s Bursa Province.

At the time her mother was cooking a meal in the kitchen, but she did not hear the splash and by the time she realised what had happened her daughter had drowned.

Fatma’s screams were heard by neighbours who called the emergency services and Elmar’s apparently lifeless body was taken by ambulance to hospital where doctors confirmed she had died.

Police have launched an investigation into the little girl’s death and have interviewed members of the family.

A post-mortem is being carried out on the toddler’s body.

“I was working in the kitchen. There was water in the bucket for cleaning. My daughter had fallen into the bucket. When I found her she was like a foetus lying in the bucket and not moving,” Fatma told police.

“I took her out of the bucket immediately and screamed for my neighbours. I didn’t realise my daughter had fallen into the bucket.”

Neighbours said the family had been left devastated by the tragedy and Elmar’s mother had been seen crying uncontrollably while clutching her daughter’s blanket.
