Today Extra hosts mock Matt Doran’s interview ‘fail’ with Adele: ‘Big trouble’

After making headlines this week for reportedly ‘offending’ Adele by telling her he hadn’t listened to her new album during an exclusive interview, Weekend Sunrise host Matt Doran was mocked by his Channel Nine competitors.

The hosts of Today Extra discussed the British superstar’s latest release, 30, on Monday morning and couldn’t help but not-so-subtly poke fun at Matt’s interview ‘fail’.

While chatting about how Adele managed to convince Spotify to remove the shuffle button for new album releases, the panel made jokes about the importance of listening to her album how she wants you to.

“Well I was listening to Adele’s new album over the weekend, and I listened to it from start to finish,” guest panellist Ben Fordham said.

“Did you?” Sylvia Jeffreys asked, followed by David Campbell who replied, “Yeah same”.

“As we’ve learnt in the last 24 hours, when Adele wants you to listen to her album a certain way, you listen to her album exactly as Adele wants. Otherwise, you find yourself in big trouble, you hear?” Ben remarked, which was met with laughter by the breakfast TV hosts.

“I haven’t listened to the album,” fellow panellist Shelly Horton then chimed in, before adding, “Maybe I need to go work at another station”.

“You’ve been cancelled, Shelley,” Sylvia then joked, to which Shelly responded, “Suspension for me”.

Matt Doran, who is engaged to the executive producer of Weekend Today, Kendall Bora, has since said he is “mortified and unequivocally apologetic” after his interview blunder with Adele.

The journalist had travelled to London for what was supposed to be Adele’s only Australian TV interview to promote her first album in six years, 30.

However, sources claimed that the singer ‘stormed out’ after the half-hour chat because he didn’t ask any questions about her new album and later admitted that he hadn’t even listened to it, according to The Daily Telegraph.

Adele’s record label Sony was also said to have been so outraged by the blunder that they refused to allow the network to air the interview as part of its $1 million package, which also included broadcast rights to Adele’s One Night Only concert special and her sit-down with Oprah Winfrey.

Speaking with The Australian, Matt revealed that he was “totally unaware” that he had been emailed a preview of her then-unreleased album to listen to before his interview earlier this month.

“I have since discovered it was sent to me as an ‘e card’ link, which I somehow missed upon landing in London,” he explained.

“It was an oversight but NOT a deliberate snub. This is the most important email I have ever missed.”

He also denied that Adele ‘stormed out’ of the interview and shut down claims that he was formally ‘suspended’ from Sunrise, despite being absent for one weekend.
