Tobacco store arson accused charged with fresh offences
A man accused of setting fire to tobacco stores and restaurants across Melbourne is back behind bars after being charged with fresh offences.
Epping man Mijad Alibadi, 25, was first granted bail in February after he was charged with 18 offences, including arson and recklessly placing persons in danger.
Some of the charges relate to fires at a Glenroy tobacco store in October, a Docklands restaurant in November and a Tullamarine reception centre in December.
But Alibadi was returned to custody last month after he was charged with a further three offences.
The 25-year-old faced Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday for a bail application hearing but it was adjourned following a request from his lawyers.
His barrister Dermot Dann KC told the court they needed more time to find a residential rehabilitation facility that will take Alibadi for treatment.
Court documents released to media on Wednesday show new allegations that Alibadi stole a Hyundai iMax van in Craigieburn on December 16, 2023.
Police also allege Alibadi destroyed a Holden Colorado Ute by setting it on fire in Beveridge on January 7, 2024.
Alibadi remained quiet throughout his brief court appearance on Wednesday morning.
He is due to return to Melbourne Magistrates Court on May 2.
