$440,000 furniture 'fraud'

A Victoria Park man who allegedly convinced people to invest more than $440,000 in a fake furniture importation business has been charged.

Major fraud squad investigators began looking into allegations of a furniture importation scheme in Perth in January.

Police will allege the man, 47, had approached potential investors throughout the metropolitan area asking them to invest in furniture shipments from Indonesia that never happened.

More than 10 people invested in the scheme, all of whom failed to receive any return on their investment.

The investigation into the scheme revealed that the man had allegedly never imported or distributed furniture to WA and had used the investors’ money for his own means.

The man has been charged with 25 counts of gaining benefit by fraud and is due to appear in Perth Magistrate’s Court on June 25.
