WAFC to outlay $300,000 for two jobs

The WA Football Commission will appoint two new highly paid executives under a restructure triggered by the resignation of chief operating officer Nick Sautner.

The positions of football affairs general manager and a separate commercial manager will be advertised today.

Candidates will have a two-week window to apply for the positions, ending on May 8.

The football affairs manager will be charged with providing “visionary leadership of football in WA”, with an emphasis on game development and making sure the WAFL competition remains sustainable.

The second executive will be responsible for finding new commercial opportunities, managing all sponsorship deals and hitting higher revenue targets for the commission.

The West Australian understands the WAFC will spend a minimum of $300,000 a year on the two positions, with a salary package of $180-200,000 for the new football affairs manager and $120,000-150,000 for the commercial manager.

Sautner, who resigned from the WAFC last month, was employed 18 months ago on a salary of about $240,000.

The restructure comes just five months after a raft of job cuts at the commission, which was facing an annual funding shortfall of almost $1 million at the time.

Two executive positions in corporate governance and corporate relations were axed, along with a further three roles within WA football’s district structure.

A salary freeze was imposed on all WAFC employees for 2015.

The restructure was decided by WAFC chief executive Gary Walton after a review last week.

He said the two positions would provide a strong future direction for the WAFC.

“This focus on football affairs and commercial management reflects our commitment to excellence in each of these areas, particularly given the new partnerships associated with stadium naming rights and the WAFL TV broadcast and our commitment to growing football participation and enhancing competitions and the talent pathway,” Walton said.
