Lions punish inaccurate Bulldogs
Swan Districts recruits Wayde Twomey and Shaun Hildebrandt played key roles in Subiaco’s 38-point win against South Fremantle at Medibank Stadium today.
The pair, who crossed from Swan Districts before the start of the season, were among the best players in the Lions’ 17.9 (111) to 9.19 (73) twilight game victory.
Twomey was a sure avenue out of defence while Hildebrandt was damaging in the midfield in warm conditions.
Another recruit, ex-VFL player Matt Boland, did well with four goals in his first game for Subiaco while small forward Rhys Waters made the most of his opportunities with five goals.
Former AFL players Ashton Hams (West Coast), James Sellar (Adelaide, Melbourne) and Ryan Cook (Collingwood) and ex-Fremantle squad member Haiden Schloithe tried hard to lift the Bulldogs.
Waters started the match brightly, kicking Subiaco’s first and third goals in the opening quarter.
The Lions, with Chris Phelan busy from the outset, had a four-point lead at the first change.
Consecutive goals to full forward Ben Saunders helped guide South Fremantle to a seven-point advantage in the opening minutes of the second stanza.
The Lions hit back with goals to George Hampson, Jason Bristow and Boland to skip eight points clear at the 19-minute mark of the second term.
Former Melbourne and Adelaide ruckman James Sellar found range two minutes later but Waters’ third goals gave the home side a 10-point buffer at half time.
Two goals to debutante Shane Yarran and Boland’s third increased Subiaco’s lead to 27 points mid-way through the third quarter.
Yarran kicked three goals and looks to have a bright future in the league.
The Lions had a 33-point buffer at three-quarter time after outscoring their opponents 4.2 (26) to 0.4 (4) in the third term.
Subiaco clash with another first-round winner, East Fremantle, in Geraldton next Saturday with the Bulldogs to host Perth at Fremantle Oval next Friday night in veteran Kris Miller’s 300th WAFL game.
