Glory 22 keep Malaysian goalie busy
Ndumba Makeche's first-half hat-trick was the highlight of Perth Glory's 9-0 rout of Malaysian side Felda United in a friendly match at Dorrien Gardens on Tuesday night.
About 300 supporters turned out for what was effectively a competitive training run for Glory, who made 11 changes to their line-up at half-time.
The starting team featured 10 players aged 22 or under. Fringe Socceroos defender Michael Thwaite was stand-in captain.
Japanese winger Ryo Nagai returned after missing last week's win over Wellington Phoenix with a minor calf injury and was busy early against Felda, firing Glory's first two shots at goal.
The home side took 16 minutes to take the lead through Makeche, who received a pass from Jamie Maclaren and cleverly skipped past a defender before curling his shot beyond advancing Felda goalkeeper Farizal Harun.
Matt Davies wasted a great chance to add a second in the 31st minute when he shot straight at the goalkeeper from close range, but Glory didn't wait long to double and then triple the advantage.
Makeche latched onto a neat through-ball from Maclaren and rounded the keeper to make it 2-0 and completed his hattrick with a nearly identical goal two minutes later.
Maclaren scored one of his own on 39 minutes, curling a shot into the top corner from well outside the box to make it 4-0 at half-time.
Glory coach Alistair Edwards brought on fresh players for the second half, including captain Jacob Burns and several youth team players.
Burns made his first appearance for Glory since completing a two-match A-League suspension.
Nigerian-born teenager Borbor Sam scored Glory's fifth goal with a neat angled shot across the keeper in the 64th minute and was brought down by Harun moments later, earning a penalty that Burns converted with ease.
Adrian Zahra made it 7-0 before Brandon O'Neill added another from the penalty spot in the 84th minute.
Sam completed the scoring in the 86th minute when he pounced on a goalkeeping error to roll the ball home.
Daniel De Silva was denied three times in the second half, first by Harun's outstretched hand, then by the woodwork when his long-range volley rebounded off the crossbar and again by the acrobatic keeper late in the match.
Glory take on Melbourne Victory in their next A-League assignment at AAMI Park on Friday.
