Harvey gets biggest slice of Federal pie

Harvey Shire Council will get a $669,802 slice of the Federal Government's Financial Assistance Grants program in the latest round which is allocated annually to local governments.

The assistance grants take into account a number of factors to support economic equalisation.

Harvey's is the biggest allocation to a local government in the region based on a population increase above the State average.

Harvey shire president Tania Jackson said the shire was a high-growth area that required lots of infrastructure.

"We are pleased to see the acknowledgement that we are still providing and maintaining infrastructure in a growing area," she said.

"Some of the funds will be used for roads among other projects."

Forrest MHR Nola Marino said almost $4.2 million was being provided to local governments in the region under the funding.

"The Australian Government recognises the important contribution councils, as the level of government closest to Australians, make to our national economy and the leadership they provide at a community level," she said.

"Local governments play a pivotal role in bringing communities together and producing local solutions to local problems.

"Importantly, this funding is untied and supports local governments to deliver on local priorities."
