Talented artist Yvonne Chapman won first prize in the Harvey Shire Council's Banners in the Terrace competition and her vibrant painting will represent the region at the display of local government entries on St George's and Adelaide terraces, Perth, from July 26 to August 5.

This year's theme was 'Switched On' and three groups within the shire submitted designs for the community group section this year.

Harvey shire president Tania Jackson said the annual Banner in the Terrace competition was a big event with up to 139 banners from local governments promoting their shires.

"We always like to be represented with an entry which epitomises the Harvey shire," she said.

"As local government representatives we can see the banners of all the other shires which compete and the idea is that we would like to be the winner.

"Yvonne's painting is of outstanding quality and we are grateful for her skills."

Mrs Chapman designed and painted the banner on behalf of the Harvey Districts Creative Arts Centre in reduced size and it will be digitally enlarged and printed onto the two-metre high banner.

The centre received $250 for the winning entry with runner-up prizes of $50 each to the Harvey Art Society for Cathy Joseph's design and the Australind Art Club for the painting of Elena Castro.

The Banners in the Terrace competition is organised by the WA Local Government Association and the State winners in each category will be announced during Local Government Week.
