Grant helps group trace family histories

Family History Society of Rockingham and Districts president Peter Godfreyadvises Mayor Barry Sammels on the best ways to trace his ancestors.

The Family History Society of Rockingham and Districts can now offer streamlined online genealogy searches, thanks to a new set of computers.

Society president Peter Godfrey said outdated computers used to search family history websites, including findmypast.com.au and ancestry.com.au, had now been updated thanks to City of Rockingham and Lotterywest grants.

He said local records were now also available to browse digitally.

"The information you can find on these websites is really brilliant," Mr Godfrey said.

"We usually have up to 50 people come along to our monthly talks, so there is quite a bit of interest."

Mayor Barry Sammels said the society, which started almost 25 years ago, provided a range of valuable services for the community.

He said the City was delighted to be associated with the society and to be able to provide support in the form of grant funding.

"Our community is very fortunate to have so many volunteers who are willing to provide their time for a wide variety of activities," Cr Sammels said.
