What fish are biting where?

Samson fish are a hard fighting sports fish that are getting a lot of attention now that the demersal ban is in effect.

Boat fishermen target these fish through a method known as jigging.

When jigging for sambos the most commonly used jigs are knife jigs worked at high speed, or large plastics worked slightly slower which are just as effective.

But for those that do not own a boat there are a few spots in the South West you can look for these fun-catching fish from land.

The nearest one to us is Busselton jetty which holds very large sambos.

Jordan from Getaway Outdoors Bunbury caught a sambo weighing 36kg last weekend with a live squid. These baits prove deadly for hungry sambos.

For a more family-based fishing trip, the Australind Estuary is definitely firing with the increasing numbers of yellowfin whiting being caught, with lures and baits being highly effective.

You will catch these fish all hours of the day but fishing at the peak of the high tide will maximise numbers of whiting on the flats.

For those chasing crabs, hard work is still needed to find these creepy crawlers.

Most reports coming in are a lot of females being caught with eggs (these must be returned) and most blueys are measuring just short. A few more weeks and the crabs should be thick.
