Mother lobbies for childcare centre

Rockingham mum Annemarie Gough hopes the City of Rockingham childcare centre will remain operational. She is pictured with her son Finn, 1.

A Rockingham mum has encouraged residents to write to their ward councillor to highlight the importance of City of Rockingham Childcare Services.

Mum-of-one Annemarie Gough said she was concerned to hear there were plans to review the Council Avenue centre, which is the only facility in the area to offer occasional care for infants and children.

Mrs Gough chose the centre for her one-year-old son Finn, who attends five days a fortnight while she works as a chemist, because bookings were not fixed.

She said many parents who used the service worked as nurses, relief teachers or in other professions that involved shift work.

"It's a nice and peaceful centre with a lovely atmosphere and lovely staff," Mrs Gough said.

"A friend of mine uses it if she is called to work at the last minute and it's handy for those who need to attend job interviews or other appointments because you can take your child there for a half day."

Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said the centre had recorded losses of $100,000 each year since 2007.

Cr Sammels said the City reviewed all of its facilities and services periodically and councillors had not made a decision about the centre's future.

"Over time the legislative compliance associated with childcare centres has increased significantly," Cr Sammels said.

"The City is reviewing its operations to determine the most efficient way of delivering childcare services while ensuring all of the legal and safety requirements are met."

Rockingham MLA Mark McGowan said City of Rockingham Childcare Services was vital for residents juggling work and family.
