Kimberley star shines in WA win

Rising Kimberley football star Sam Petrevski-Seton has made a prominent start at the national under-18s competition, starring in Saturday's thrilling one-point win over South Australia.

The 17-year-old, who debuted for Claremont earlier this year, put in a classy performance through the midfield, collecting 18 touches and six tackles in the 11.7 (73) to 9.18 (72) win.

Still a bottom-aged player in the under-18s competition and ineligible to be drafted to the AFL until 2016, the Halls Creek product is already on the radar of recruiters after dominating last year's under-16s carnival.

He was awarded the Kevin Sheehan Medal for player of the under-16s carnival last year, averaging 21 disposals and five clearances and kicking seven goals in three games.

At the time, league sources were glowing in their assessment of the teenager, declaring him the early favourite to be the No.1 pick in the 2016 AFL draft.

Listed at 178cm and 70kg, Petrevski-Seton was also last week named in WA's the six-man leadership group for the national under-18s championships.

WAFL talent manager Raff Guadagnino said the academy was excited to welcome a squad and provide an opportunity for them to develop.

"All State players must be capable of becoming strong contributors to their WAFL clubs at senior level," he said.

"Throughout the selection process, WA has focused on players who possess all-round skills, and, most importantly, are solid characters."

Saturday's result marked the perfect start for WA at this year's championships after a disappointing 2014 campaign in which they lost their first five matches.

WA next face Vic Country this Sunday at Leederville Oval in Perth before a road trip to take on South Australia again in Adelaide.
