A 23-year-old Mt Barker man has been fined $2500 and ordered to pay $182 in court costs after pleading guilty to maliciously beating his Staffordshire puppy with a garden hose.

Thomas Herbert Glass was sentenced in Albany Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday to ill treatment of his puppy Dex in 2013.

Dex was seized by a RSPCA inspector and an examination by a vet revealed previous trauma to his skull and a healed rib fracture.

RSPCA WA chief inspector Amanda Swift said the deliberate cruel treatment of animals would not be tolerated and RSPCA would take action against people who treat their animals in this manner.

“I hope this is sending a clear message that this kind of behaviour is unacceptable and is punishable in a court of law,” she said.

“We are pleased that after spending a considerable amount of time with us Dex has now found a loving home.”

Dex now resides in Perth.
