Shepherd storms to victory

Albany's Adrian Shepherd carves out a nice wave during the WA Pro Am Series at Rottnest Island.

Albany surfer Adrian Shepherd has his sights set on winning another State title after two strong performances in round 2 of the WA Pro Am Series at Rottnest Island at the weekend.

After missing the opening round of the series with a shoulder injury, Shepherd competed in the over-45 grand masters and over-50 legends divisions in challenging winter conditions.

Shepherd powered his way to victory in both divisions to keep alive his hopes of winning another State title and making the WA team for the national titles.

He carved out an impressive score of 11.33 points in the over-45 grand masters final to defeat Margaret River's Brad Cowan on 10 points.

In the over-50 legends final, it was again a solid display of speed and powerful backhand surfing from Shepherd that scored 9.9 points and got him the win ahead of Cowan on 7.3 points.

"I had a very fruitful weekend," Shepherd said.

"I was unable to make the first one due to injury so I need to do well in the last one to make the State team, win a State title and go to nationals.

"The competition was stiff and that's all we can hope for … I'm not really over the injury, it's quite painful at times, but that goes with it all."

The third and final round of the series will be held in Geraldton, where Shepherd has had good results on previous visits.

Meanwhile, Denmark's Emi Campbell also competed at the event, finishing an impressive third in the open women's division.

Campbell carved out a score of 16.89 points to finish behind 2015 State champion Claire Bevilacqua (28.84 points) and Bailee Hastie (19.6).
