Cranbrook reveals "Bob's" antics

Motorists travelling through Cranbrook have been doing double-takes after an elusive, costume-changing scarecrow-like figure popped up on the main street recently.

The 6ft tall hard-hat wearing figure, known as Bob, is currently propped up on the corner of Great Southern Highway wearing a Superman costume, but has been a bushman, a policeman and a farmer.

Bob has also been spotted donning a white bridal gown after a cheeky hen’s party “borrowed” him for the night.

Cranbrook Post Office owner Peter Denton, or “Postie Pete” as locals know him, came up with the idea for a town mascot and said he wanted to inject a bit of colour into town.

“It brightens up the town,” he said.

“Yesterday, we had a woman come into the shop who said she was feeling really down, until she came around the corner and saw Superman and she was still laughing when she came to the counter.

“It made her day.”

Mr Denton said the now-famous Bob took his name from Cranbrook police Sergeant Bob Scott because he once went missing from his post.

A missing person report was filed for Bob, but Sgt Scott was quick on the case and found him behind the Cranbrook Shire Hall.

“He’s a bit of a wanderer,” Sgt Scott said.

“It’s a shame we haven’t taken photographic evidence of the adventures of Bob.

“I think it’s a novel idea for people to notice Cranbrook, it’s a really small place … how do you get people to remember the place?

“Now when they go home, they will say ‘did you see that in Cranbrook?”
