Students get a glimpse of Asian hockey

Great Southern Grammar students Jack Johnson, Jessie Leo, Clayire Gonzales and Finn Edgar.

Great Southern Grammar embarked on their fourth international hockey tour last week when 28 students travel to Malaysia and Singapore to compete in matches against local school teams.

The touring students will leave Australia on Friday and will spend four days in Singapore and four days in Kuala Lumpur, playing local schools in friendly matches and visiting a number of tourist attractions.

A team of 14 boys will be coached by Rob Stainton and the girls’ side, also made up of 14 players, will be coached by Adam Scott.

Each team will play four matches during the tour.

Mr Scott said it was a great challenge to play hockey in a different country.

“It is nice if you can play sport and play it internationally,” Mr Scott said.

“The Asian teams have a different style of hockey and the weather is a lot different over there compared to Albany.”

He said the aim of the trip was for the players to improve.

“We want them to develop their hockey,” Mr Scott said.

“They have done a solid pre-season, skills and fitness sessions for the past seven weeks and this is a chance for them to take their hockey a bit more seriously.

“We will also do a few tours and tourist things, visit a theme park and the Singapore Zoo.”
