Youth leadership focus

Country Arts WA is offering local emerging arts practitioners the opportunity to co-ordinate and deliver a unique youth leadership program as part of the upcoming Regional Arts Australia Summit.

The summit is held biennially and brings together hundreds of people from across the country who work in, are involved in or are interested in the arts in regional Australia.

The 2014 summit, titled Arts and Edges, will take place in Kalgoorlie-Boulder from October 16-19 and will be the first of the events to hold a youth leadership program.

CAWA is seeking to appoint a dynamic creative producer to work with the summit’s artistic director Ben Fox and nine young people selected from across regional WA, engaging and participating in the event through digital technologies.

Locals aged 18 to 35 with a passion for the arts, a dedication to learning professional arts skills, demonstrated leadership and an interest in social innovation are encouraged to apply before March 14. Mr Fox said working with local Aboriginal artists and young people in the arts and culture industry were two of the main focuses of Arts and Edges, and the appointment of Gary Cooper as Aboriginal creative producer and the upcoming appointment of a creative producer for this program would help achieve these goals.

“We established the summit is really strong in engaging with people who are aged 30 and up and who work in the arts across Australia, so we have made a strategic decision to focus on engaging with local Aboriginal artists and people who are young and working locally in the arts and culture industry,” he said.
