P-plater lucky to be alive

A young woman can count herself lucky to have escaped this collision without serious injury.

Travelling south on North West Coastal Hwy in Wonthella on Wednesday afternoon, the P-plate driver turned right into Phelp St without giving way to oncoming traffic.

That traffic consisted of a Fuso truck, the driver of which was unable to avoid the collision and slammed into the small Mazda hatchback.

Police at the scene were joined by Fire and Emergency Rescue Service crews and a St Johns Ambulance, as traffic at the busy intersection was brought to a halt.

Taken to hospital for observation, the female driver was released after being treated for shock.

Both drivers returned negative blood alcohol readings but the young woman was charged by infringement notice with failing to give way to oncoming traffic.

For a probationary driver that potentially means the loss of her licence, in addition to the loss of her severely damaged car.
