Mustangs sure to be crowd favourites

There are few muscle cars with genuine status on the world stage but the iconic Ford Mustang is high on that very special list.

While Quit Targa West celebrates its 10th birthday, the Mustang can blow out 50 candles on its cake this year with the first deep-burbling V8 hitting the road in April 1964.

Perth's Frank Huber, owner of Frank's Classic Garage Racing Team, has commemorated the milestone by entering two classic Mustangs in QTW 2014: a 1965 Fastback GT350 and 1965 Coupe, plus a 1964 Falcon Sprint which he'll be driving with navigator Wayne Turner.

I'm told enthusiasts still rate the 1965 as among the most collectable of Mustangs and motorsport enthusiast Huber said he could not think of a better way to celebrate the two birthdays.

With tarmac rallies now dominated by four-cylinder four-wheel-drives, the sound of a finely tuned V8 at the start line is attention-grabbing.

While the beautiful beasts Huber and his team built and maintain may no longer be capable of competing alongside the front runners, there is little doubt they are sure to be among the crowd favourites.

Paul Crute will drive the Coupe with Paul Gusterson and said their main aim was to continue enjoying competing in the car and to finish the event, which they have achieved so far in the four QTWs they've entered.

The Fastback, classed as an early classic in the comp category, is in the capable hands of Kim Stewart and Frank Zanotti.

With the Falcon soon destined for departure from manufacturing and the arrival of the new Mustang in Ford dealerships next year, what's the bet that a 'Stang could play a part in V8 Supercars' future?

I'd sure like to see that.
