Idle Torque: Tune into motorsport history

The famous Bathurst race during the 1960s will feature on the TV show.

_NOW _ that we've all got a video camera in our pockets, everyone's ready to capture for posterity such wondrous phenomena as kittens, tired babies, public arguments and people falling over.

It also means there is a lot of car footage online. Most of this is shot using mobile phones, so it looks like a vehicular version of the Blair Witch Project.

Quality car shows are out there in cyberspace, you just have to know where to look. The Petrolicious website is the best source I know of right now.

Just Google it and I guarantee you won't get anything done for the rest of the day.

Of course, comedian Jerry Seinfeld's very specifically titled show Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is also great.

We Aussies have had a crack or two at making traditional shows about cars, the most memorable being Torque, which ran between 1973 and 1980 and was hosted by the late Peter Wherrett.

Today, another new Australian program will appear on our small screens. It's called Shannons Legends of Motorsport, which gives a subtle hint as to who might be sponsoring it.

Shannons has said the show brings to life the history of Australian motorsport with rarely seen historical footage from Channel 7's extensive archives dating from the 1960s to the 1990s.

It'll be hosted by motorsport commentator Neil Crompton, who will interview racing greats including Allan Moffat, Dick Johnson, Fred Gibson and Kevin Bartlett.
