Doing it for Telethon

Nine-year-old Scott Guerini started fundraising for Telethon when he was just four.

“I thought about it for a while, then I asked Mum if I could do a walk to raise money,” he says. “She said no for the first two weeks and then finally she said yes — go as far as you can go.”

Scott has done what has been dubbed Scott’s Great Walk for Telethon every year since and has raised more than $60,000 for Telethon. This year he is Telethon’s young ambassador for the HBF Run for a Reason and he hopes to raise $20,000 for the cause.

“I want to help sick kids and babies,” Scott says.

Scott’s mother Nicole is incredibly proud of her son. “He has a whole lot of strength and determination and drive,” she says. “Last year he did a marathon and I walked it with him. I found it extremely difficult and Scott had moments where he sat on the road and had a little cry, but each time he got up and kept going. He just kept thinking about the people behind him, supporting him and he didn’t want to let anyone down.”

Seven Perth reporter and weekend presenter Blake Johnson says he is looking forward to the challenge of entering his first HBF Run for a Reason.

“I’ve never really enjoyed running, so I’m definitely looking forward to reaching that finish line,” he jokes. “Our whole newsroom is competing in the run and, given that we’re reporters, we’re pretty competitive. If I finish towards the front of our newsroom field I’d be pretty happy.”

Money raised for Telethon will go predominantly to PMH and the Telethon Kids Institute.
