Heads up on hangovers

In the Philippines, a fertilised duck embryo is recommended, in Sicily it's a dried bull's member and in Mongolia it's a sheep's eyeball. But surely there have to be less gruesome ways to treat the dreaded hangover, right?

In what started out as a dabble in herbs and their effects on detoxification (after a tipple or three), two chaps, an engineer and a horticulturalist, set the wheels in motion for what is now known as an effective natural hangover cure, aptly named HeadsUp.

Years later, their friend, ex-paramedic and rugby player Jon Summers came on board and took the supplement to another level with the sole intention of eliminating hangovers.

Mr Summers introduced a pharmacist into the mix and the pair refined the formula through mixing and testing countless potions until the finished product evolved into what it is today.

"The theory behind the product is to enhance the body's ability to eliminate toxins which we are bombarded with each day; in the air we breathe, the food we eat and what we drink, and alcohol is no exception," he said. "We just encourage the body to do what it does best - detoxify."

HeadsUp contains a powerful blend of liver toners and detoxifiers, such as milk thistle and dandelion root, ginger for soothing the tummy, brahmi for clearing the head, vitamin C and an array of B vitamins for energy.

"There is no question; the majority of people who drink alcohol would like to feel better and be more productive the next day. We just wanted to provide a natural option that did not add to the problem," said Mr Summers.

At this year's Golden Globes, nominees were given a couple of HeadsUp kits in their goodie bag, or the Hollywood Swag Bag as the celebs know it - a stroke of PR genius on Summer's part - and the Oscars is next on his agenda.

"Hopefully Patricia Arquette, Matthew McConaughey and Bill Murray took a dose and spread the word," he said.
